Life at the Camp

Besides training and work, there was lots to do at Northam Army Camp.

Various activities were held in the canteens and recreation huts every night of the week. There were bridge, table tennis and other games, movies were shown each Tuesday and Friday, and bands such as the Merry Makers of Perth and Handcocks Orphans came up to give concerts.

Boxing tournaments were held most weeks and on Sunday mornings, the recreation huts were used for church services. Dances in Northam were also a popular diversion.

Sundays were a day off for most, when family and friends could visit. Special passenger trains came up from Perth each Sunday, arriving before lunch and leaving late in the afternoon. Burlong Pool was a popular swimming spot in the summer months.

Monthly weekend leave was often spent in Perth.
